How do envelope folding tables work?

The top consists of four triangular leaves hinged to a central rotating pivot. When turned diagonally, the leaves fold outward to reveal the lined interior. This ingenious mechanism allows the table to occupy a compact square footprint when closed while providing a stable, full-sized surface for card games when open.

What woods were used for these tables?

Makers relied heavily on mahogany as a sturdy structural base, often pairing it with decorative veneers of rosewood, satinwood, and burr walnut. Stringing and cross-banding utilised lighter or darker woods like boxwood and ebony to create sharp contrast and formal geometric borders.

How do I care for the baize surface?

The woollen baize requires gentle brushing to remove dust and should be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Moisture must be avoided entirely to protect the fabric and the wooden bed beneath. Regular light maintenance preserves the soft texture essential for dealing cards smoothly across the vintage surface.

Are these tables suitable for small rooms?

Their compact closed dimensions make them exceptionally well-suited for smaller living spaces as occasional or side tables. They remain neatly tucked against a wall until needed for evening games or writing. The ability to expand only when required offers practical flexibility without overwhelming a room.
