What is an edwardian floral inlay table used for?

These tables served primarily as occasional pieces in drawing rooms and parlours to hold small lamps, decorative clocks, or floral arrangements. Their light construction meant they could be moved easily about the room as social habits shifted. Today, they function well beside armchairs or as display surfaces in hallways, offering a practical table top combined with decorative botanical marquetry.

How do I identify an edwardian piece?

Edwardian furniture typically displays lighter proportions, brighter wood tones like satinwood, and delicate inlay work compared to heavier Victorian styles. The influence of the Sheraton Revival remains strong in the tapered legs and symmetrical floral patterns. Examining the underside and interior timbers helps confirm the period construction methods and materials used by early twentieth-century workshops.

Are these tables made of solid wood?

The primary frames and legs are generally constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. However, the decorated table tops usually feature fine veneers applied over a stable secondary timber base to prevent warping. This veneered construction allowed cabinet makers to combine diverse exotic timbers and create intricate floral marquetry designs that solid wood boards would not support.

How do I care for floral inlay surfaces?

Keep these tables away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to prevent the delicate wood veneers and natural glues from drying out. Consistent indoor humidity protects the fine marquetry from lifting. Dust gently with a dry cloth and apply occasional high-quality furniture wax sparingly to maintain the natural sheen of the polished timber.
