How do I date a dressing table?

Dating relies on combining the timber choice, hardware style, and construction methods visible in the drawers and mirror supports. Earlier Georgian and Regency pieces favour simpler mahogany frames, whilst Victorian and Edwardian examples introduce heavier carved details and varied veneers. Looking at the mirror plate itself also helps, as hand bevelising and older silvering techniques differ noticeably from twentieth century manufacturing standards.

Where should I place it?

Position your dressing table near a natural light source, such as a window, to make the best use of the mirror during daytime grooming. Ensure there is adequate clearance around the piece for any accompanying stool and to allow drawers to open fully. Because many period pieces feature polished wood veneers, keep them away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent fading and timber splitting.

Are the mirrors original?

Many surviving dressing tables retain their original glass, which can sometimes show light foxing or spotting due to age. Replacements do occur, so check the fit within the frame and the backing boards to gauge authenticity. Original mirrors often feature thinner glass with subtle distortions, whereas later replacements tend to be perfectly uniform.

How do I care for the wood?

Maintain the timber surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding silicone based polishes that build up over time. Feed dry period wood occasionally with a quality beeswax to nourish the grain and preserve the finish. Protect the top surface from cosmetics and moisture by using trays or mats beneath bottles and jars.
