What is a tier table used for?

A tier table provides multiple surfaces for holding lamps, books, or decorative objects within a compact footprint. These pieces function well beside seating or in corners where standard single-surface tables take up too much room. Historically, specific configurations like dumb waiters and whatnots served specialised dining and display purposes. Today, buyers utilise them as versatile bedside stands, lamp tables, or occasional display surfaces.

How do I identify a Georgian tier table?

Georgian tier tables typically feature heavy solid mahogany construction, tripod column supports, and classical turning details. Pieces from this era often take the form of graduating dumb waiters or etageres dating from the 18th century. Proportions remain balanced and functional, avoiding excessive ornamentation. Construction methods rely on traditional joinery without modern metal fasteners.

What is the difference between a whatnot and an etagere?

A whatnot generally refers to an upright set of rectangular shelves utilised for storing books and displaying ornaments in Victorian and Edwardian interiors. These items often incorporate cabinet doors or drawer compartments at the base. An etagere is a lighter French-influenced form featuring delicate tiered shelves supported by slender columns. Both styles provide multi-level display options but serve different aesthetic traditions.

How do I care for dark mahogany furniture?

Maintenance involves dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent particulate accumulation on polished surfaces. Avoiding direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations protects the timber from drying and splitting. Occasional application of appropriate wax feeds the wood and preserves the natural lustre of the dark mahogany. Moisture should be wiped away immediately to prevent water marks on the finish.
