Antique Mahogany Georgian Round Tiered Side Table Buffet Server Stand

19th century
Description

A very elegant antique mahogany round tiered side table of classic Georgian design, well proportioned with a rich, warm colour. The three circular tiers are graduated and supported by a turned central column, raised on a shaped tripod base with pad feet, giving the piece a refined and balanced appearance.

The circular form allows it to be used from all sides, making it both practical and visually appealing within a room. The tiered design provides generous space for display, drinks or serving while maintaining a compact footprint.

Originally used in dining rooms as a serving stand, these pieces acted as an early form of buffet, holding dishes, drinks and tableware during meals so everything could be easily reached. Today it works perfectly as a tiered side table, buffet server, drinks stand or bar table, making it highly versatile for modern interiors.

The rich mahogany tone and simple, elegant construction are characteristic of well made Georgian furniture, designed with both function and longevity in mind.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in 18th-century Britain, the dumbwaiter was designed for dining rooms to hold side dishes, condiments, and plates. Its multi-tiered layout allowed diners to serve themselves without the presence of servants, ensuring privacy during conversations.

Georgian dumbwaiters were typically crafted from solid mahogany, valued for its dense grain and durability. Construction featured hand-turned central pillars, hand-lathed circular trays often with raised moulded rims, and hand-fitted tripod bases.

Authentic period pieces display hand-turned upright supports, graduated tray sizes, and natural shrinkage or slight irregularity in the timber circular tops over time. Look for original hand-cut dovetails or threading where the central column connects to the tripod legs.

A tiered stand functions effectively as an occasional side table next to seating or in an empty alcove. The graduated levels can be styled with structured ceramics, glassware, or small potted plants to introduce vertical interest.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Apply a quality beeswax polish periodically following the grain of the wood, and position the piece away from direct sunlight and modern central heating radiators to prevent drying or splitting.
