What is a Sutherland table?

A Sutherland table is a narrow drop-leaf table with hinged flaps and swinging gatelegs designed to fold down flat. This clever mechanism allows the piece to rest flush against a wall when not in use. Created during the nineteenth century, these tables provide versatile surface space for tea or books while maintaining a minimal footprint in smaller rooms.

How do I identify an Edwardian table?

Edwardian tables often display lighter timbers, subtle satinwood inlay, and refined Edwardian proportions dating from the early twentieth century. They frequently reflect a lighter aesthetic compared to heavier Victorian counterparts. Look for crisp detailing and polished mahogany or oak surfaces that prioritize domestic convenience and refined styling.

Where did people use these small tables?

These tables served various functions in sitting rooms, bedrooms, and libraries as occasional surfaces for lamps, books, or tea service. Their portable nature allowed servants or residents to move them easily around the home. In modern spaces, they continue to function effectively beside armchairs or sofas where floor space is limited.

What distinguishes a gateleg from a drop leaf?

All gateleg tables are a form of drop leaf table, but not all drop leaf tables use a swinging gateleg action. Gateleg designs specifically employ legs that pivot outward to physically hold up the extended flaps. Other drop leaf variants might use fixed brackets, swing-out wooden arms, or pull-out supports instead of moving legs.
