What is a cobalt blue cabinet plate?

A cobalt blue cabinet plate is an ornamental ceramic dish featuring deep blue glazes, designed for display in cabinets or on walls rather than for table service. These pieces often incorporate hand-painted scenes, gilt borders, and intricate patterns produced by European and Asian potteries throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

How were cabinet plates used?

Cabinet plates were manufactured primarily for visual display, serving as ornamental centerpieces in drawing rooms and dining parlours. Wealthy households showcased them in glass-fronted cabinets to demonstrate taste and status. Some sets functioned as dessert plates for special occasions, though many fine examples with heavy gilding remained strictly decorative.

How do I identify the maker?

Makers' marks, ciphers, and pattern names are typically stamped, painted, or impressed on the reverse of the ceramic body. Many nineteenth-century English and European pieces also feature handwritten titles of painted views or artist signatures near the centre. Comparing standard factory marks, registration numbers, and stylistic motifs helps narrow down the date and place of manufacture.

How should I display them safely?

Displaying these plates requires sturdy wall mounts with protective coatings or dedicated plate stands designed for heavy porcelain and ironstone. Keeping them away from direct sunlight preserves the vibrancy of the hand-painted enamels and gold leaf. Ensure cabinet shelves are stable and avoid stacking delicate gilded items to prevent surface scratching.
