What is a carved three drawer commode?

A carved three drawer commode is a low storage chest featuring three operating drawers and decorative woodwork. These pieces originate from various European and English traditions. Cabinet makers produced them in woods like oak, walnut, and mahogany across the seventeenth to twentieth centuries. They function as both storage furniture and decorative focal points.

How do I distinguish French provincial from English styles?

French provincial commodes often feature softer fruitwoods like cherry and chestnut alongside shaped aprons and carved panels. English pieces tend to use oak, mahogany, or walnut with more rectilinear proportions. Continental examples may also include bombe profiles and marble tops. English chests of the same eras generally maintain flatter drawer configurations.

Where should I place a bedside cabinet?

Bedside cabinets and small chests suit bedrooms where surface space and enclosed storage are both required. Their compact footprint accommodates lamps and books while keeping personal items concealed. Matching pairs provide symmetry beside a bed. Single cabinets work well alongside armchairs or in smaller guest rooms.

How do I care for antique wood surfaces?

Antique wood surfaces respond best to regular dusting with a dry cloth and occasional waxing with traditional beeswax. Avoid placing wooden furniture near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. Moisture can damage polished finishes and veneers. Using coasters and felt pads protects timber tops from daily wear.
