Where should I place a pedestal table?

These tables suit hallways, libraries, or the middle of reception rooms where a freestanding piece can be viewed from all angles. The central column design allows chairs to tuck in neatly without corner legs obstructing seating.

How do I care for oak furniture?

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and avoiding placement near direct heat sources that cause wood to split. Apply occasional appropriate wax polish to nourish the grain and protect the surface finish.

What styles are common in these tables?

Common stylistic influences include Gothic Revival and Jacobean Revival, characterised by tracery, linenfold panels, and deep relief carving. Victorian and Edwardian iterations frequently combine these historicist details with practical domestic forms.

How can I tell the period?

Dating relies on examining construction marks, timber preparation methods, and the specific decorative vocabulary employed by the maker. Nineteenth-century pieces often display heavier proportions and darker patination compared to later Edwardian adaptations.
