How do I use a camphor wood blanket chest at home?

These chests function well as living room coffee tables, bedroom storage boxes, or hallway blanket chests. The natural aroma of the timber helps keep stored textiles fresh. Place the trunk away from direct heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out. Ensure the lid opens freely without obstruction from walls or surrounding furniture.

What is the difference between a campaign chest and an export chest?

Campaign chests prioritise functional durability with plain wood, flush brass corners, and robust carrying handles for military relocation. They were built strictly for transport. Export chests made in China often feature intricate hand carvings, painted decoration, or brass mounts tailored for Western domestic interiors rather than rough field use.

Why do these chests smell strongly of camphor?

Camphor wood naturally contains aromatic oils that give the timber its distinct scent. This wood was selected specifically because the fragrance deters moths and insects from damaging stored blankets and woollens. The intensity of the scent can diminish over decades but often refreshes if the interior wood is lightly sanded or exposed to fresh air.

How can I tell a nineteenth-century chest from a later one?

Nineteenth-century campaign pieces generally feature heavy brass binding, hand-cut dovetails, and substantial solid camphor wood construction. They often show authentic wear from travel. Later pieces from the early twentieth century may incorporate machine-cut elements, different locking mechanisms, or deep decorative carvings associated with Art Deco or Oriental export styles.
