What is the difference between a toilet mirror and a dressing table?

A toilet mirror is a portable glass frame designed to sit on top of an existing chest or surface for personal grooming. A dressing table is a complete, freestanding piece of furniture incorporating a surface, drawers, and frequently an attached or matching mirror.

How do I identify a Georgian dressing table mirror?

Georgian examples typically feature rich mahogany construction, delicate boxwood stringing, and heavy brass swing arm hardware. The base boxes often contain small shaped drawers assembled with hand-cut dovetails characteristic of eighteenth-century cabinetwork.

Are these mirrors original to the tables?

Many surviving dressing tables retain their original pivoting frames and mercury or early silvered mirror glass. Over the centuries, however, some glass plates have been replaced due to degradation, so inspecting the backing and silvering helps determine originality.

Where were these pieces used in the home?

These items primarily furnished bedrooms, dressing rooms, and private chambers where occupants performed morning and evening hygiene routines. Some smaller scaled writing desks and lowboys also served multi-functional roles in reception rooms and hallways.
