Brown Mahogany Washstand
A brown mahogany washstand brings rich timber warmth and period practicality to a room.
Brown Mahogany Washstand
A brown mahogany washstand is a functional wooden item designed for personal ablutions, taking several forms across the Georgian, Regency, Edwardian, and mid-nineteenth-century periods. These pieces appear as corner washstands, concave-front knee-hole dressing tables, and marble-topped washstands, alongside related side table forms.
How they were made
These items are constructed primarily from mahogany, frequently combined with secondary woods such as pine. Structural and decorative additions include marble tops, brass elements, ceramic tiles, and glass components.
Joinery and timber selection dictate the build, utilising the natural grain and deep brown colour of mahogany. Associated materials like marble and tiles are integrated to provide durable surfaces for daily washing.

What varies in quality
Quality rests in the selection of the mahogany timber and the crispness of the cabinet-making. Pieces that incorporate fitted marble tops, ceramic tiles, or detailed brass work demonstrate higher ambition in construction.
Proportion and the handling of tricky forms, such as concave fronts or tight corner installations, separate standard domestic output from finer examples. The integration of secondary materials like glass and pine further defines the scale of craftsmanship.
