A purdonium is a Victorian or Edwardian coal container designed for domestic firesides. It combines storage utility with decorative cabinetry or metalwork. These pieces usually house a removable metal liner to hold coal or logs cleanly near the hearth.

How do I use one today?

These bins function well as contemporary fireside log stores or kindling baskets. They also serve as decorative planters or umbrella stands in traditional hallways. The enclosed design keeps clutter out of sight while adding period character to a room.

Did they always include a shovel?

Many surviving examples retain their original matching shovel, which often slips into a designated rack or sleeve on the back or side of the bin. Finding a piece with its original shovel and metal liner remains a bonus for collectors.

How do I date a brass purdonium?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, such as the curved lines of Art Nouveau, the hammered surfaces of Arts and Crafts pieces, or the rich mahogany veneers of the Victorian period. Construction methods, lock types, and handle designs also help narrow down the decade of manufacture between the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
