What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a portable piece of furniture built to dismantle into modular sections for military officers on active service. These units include inset brass handles and reinforced corners to endure frequent transport. Such chests prioritise structural strength and space efficiency, often incorporating hidden compartments or folding desks within the primary carcass.

Why use camphor wood for trunks?

Camphor wood was chosen for maritime and military trunks because its natural aromatic oils repel moths and other damaging insects. This made the wood ideal for protecting woollens and uniforms during long voyages. Additionally, the timber resists moisture and warping in tropical climates, keeping stored contents stable across varied weather conditions.

How do I date a brass bound chest?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction joints, screw types and the style of the brass hardware. Eighteenth-century examples often feature hand-forged iron alongside brass, while Victorian pieces show machine-made precision. Interior fittings, paper linings and maker stamps also provide clues to the precise decade of manufacture.

Where should I place a trunk at home?

These chests function effectively as coffee tables in living spaces or as blanket storage at the foot of a bed. Their flat tops and durable construction allow them to support lamps, books and decorative objects. Placing them away from direct heat sources protects the old timber from drying out and prevents the brass fittings from loosening.
