What is a bow front tallboy?

A bow front tallboy is a tall chest of drawers featuring a convex, curved front profile. These units combine the height of a tallboy or chest on chest with the distinct rounded facade characteristic of certain Georgian and later designs. They function primarily as prominent bedroom furniture pieces designed to offer generous vertical storage without sacrificing floor space.

How do I date a bow front tallboy?

Dating these pieces involves examining the timber species, secondary woods, overall proportions, and decorative details like banding. Georgian and Regency examples frequently utilise solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneer with subtle stringing, whereas 1920s and 1930s revivals often showcase burr walnut. Construction methods inside the drawers and cabinet backs also provide clear clues to the manufacturing era.

Where were these pieces used?

Historically, bow front tallboys served as essential bedroom furnishings for storing garments, bed linen, and personal belongings. Their tall profile made them practical for rooms with limited floor space. Today, they function similarly in domestic settings, providing substantial drawer capacity while serving as focal points in hallways, landings, or bedrooms.

How do I maintain a walnut or mahogany tallboy?

Maintenance involves keeping wooden furniture away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature shifts to prevent timber splitting and veneer lifting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the finish. Occasional application of appropriate wax polish helps maintain the natural lustre of mahogany and burr walnut surfaces.
