What is a Davenport desk?

A Davenport is a compact Victorian writing desk featuring a sloped, leather-lined writing surface above a bank of side drawers. These pieces were designed for smaller domestic spaces where a full-sized pedestal desk would prove too cumbersome.

How do I identify a Georgian bureau?

Georgian bureaux are typically constructed from dense mahogany or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetails and bracket feet supporting a fall-front writing flap. Inside, the fitted interior often contains pigeonholes and secret compartments characteristic of eighteenth-century cabinet-making.

Where were secret drawers located?

Secret drawers in writing furniture are commonly hidden behind removable pigeonhole compartments, sliding panels, or disguised as structural mouldings within the interior. Cabinet-makers built these concealed spaces to secure correspondence, currency, and valuables from casual inspection.

How should I care for leather desk inserts?

Leather writing surfaces require gentle dusting and occasional treatment with neutral leather balms to prevent the material from drying and cracking over time. Avoiding direct sunlight and excessive moisture preserves both the leather texture and the surrounding timber finish.
