What is an antique wooden card table?

An antique wooden card table is a specialised piece of furniture featuring a folding, swivel, or concertina top designed specifically for card games and social entertainment. These tables typically remain closed against a wall as a console or side table until needed for play.

How were these tables used historically?

Historically, households utilised these tables during evening gatherings for card games, chess, backgammon, and tea. The hinged tops allowed hosts to quickly transform a room's furniture layout. Many designs incorporated hidden wells or compartments to store playing pieces, dice, and counters.

How do I identify a Georgian card table?

Georgian card tables often feature mahogany or walnut construction, sometimes with demilune or D-shaped profiles, and occasionally incorporate intricate satinwood inlay or hand-painted details. They frequently employ concertina actions or fold-over leaves supported by swing legs.

Where should I place one in my home?

You can place an antique wooden card table against a hallway or living room wall in its closed position to function as a side or console table. Opening the leaf allows the piece to serve as an occasional table or a games surface when hosting guests.
