What is an overmantle mirror?

An overmantle mirror is a large looking glass designed to hang directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. These pieces frequently feature architectural framing or ornate gesso decoration to anchor the wall space. Historically, they were positioned to bounce natural light around formal reception rooms while complementing the mantel furniture below.

How do I identify original mirror glass?

Original antique glass often displays subtle imperfections, slight foxing, or minimal silver loss behind the surface. Mercury glass carries a distinct dark, crystalline depth compared to modern reflective coatings. Inspecting the backing boards and frame fixings helps confirm whether the plate has remained undisturbed since manufacture.

Where should I hang a pier mirror?

Pier mirrors are traditionally proportioned for the narrow expanse of wall situated between two windows. Their vertical format draws the eye upward and maximises available daylight. In modern interiors, they function equally well in narrow hallways or above slim console tables.

What distinguishes Regency wall mirrors?

Regency wall mirrors typically exhibit classical restraint, incorporating reeded columns, ball-stud frames, or giltwood eagle crestings. The designs draw heavily upon ancient Greek and Roman motifs. Proportions during this period remained neat and balanced, favouring dark mahogany or bright gilded finishes.
