How were sorrento tables used?

They served as decorative occasional and side pieces in nineteenth century drawing rooms and halls. Some designs, such as butler's tray tables and tilt top tables, offered flexible functionality for daily living. Many arrived in Britain via the Grand Tour, functioning both as useful furniture and as souvenirs of travel.

How do I date a sorrento table?

Dating relies on stylistic markers from the nineteenth century, including Victorian and Edwardian periods, alongside specific construction methods. Evidence shows pieces ranging from the early nineteenth century through to the Edwardian era, with many originating around eighteen eighty.

What woods appear in these tables?

Makers utilised walnut, olive wood, and various fruitwoods as primary materials and veneers. Mixed hardwood veneers and fruitwood inlay provided contrasting colours for the detailed marquetry. These woods give the tables their characteristic warm tone and varied grain patterns.
