What is an antique salesman sample?

These are miniature objects and scaled models carried by commercial travellers to demonstrate full-size furniture, hardware, or machinery to prospective buyers. They allowed merchants to show goods across regions without transporting heavy inventory.

Were these items used as toys?

Most pieces served commercial or training functions rather than child play, though some overlap exists with dollhouse furnishings and children's items. Apprentice pieces specifically represented tests of skill for woodworkers learning their trade.

What materials are most common?

Mahogany, oak, walnut, and pine dominate the wooden furniture, while cast iron and brass appear frequently in stoves, fireplaces, and hardware boards. Makers matched the materials of the full-scale originals whenever possible.
