What subjects define a pastoral picture?

These works focus on agrarian scenes, featuring shepherds, milkmaids, cattle, sheep and harvesters resting in meadows or woodlands. The emphasis remains on a peaceful, idealised view of traditional country living. Such imagery provided urban homeowners with a comforting connection to nature and agricultural heritage throughout the Georgian and Victorian periods.

How should I hang fragile textile pictures?

Needlework, silk works and watercolours require protection from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the delicate threads and paper pigments. Hang them on interior walls away from damp spaces and excessive temperature fluctuations. Keeping these pieces behind UV-filtering glass ensures the textiles and watercolours survive without degradation to the original fibres.

How do I date an antique frame?

Frames provide vital clues through their construction methods, corner joints and applied ornamentation. Georgian and Regency frames often utilise simpler Hogarth profiles or hand-carved wooden mouldings, whereas Victorian examples favour heavier gesso and giltwood. Examining the backing boards and fixings helps confirm whether the frame has remained with the artwork since its creation.

What is the difference between an oil and a watercolour?

Oil paintings utilise pigment suspended in drying oils applied to canvas, wood panels or board, offering rich textures and deep colour blending. Watercolours use water-soluble pigments on paper, producing lighter, translucent effects. Oils generally proved more durable for large display pieces, while watercolours were often mounted under glass with paper mats.
