What is an antique marble group?

An antique marble group is a sculptural composition featuring two or more figures carved from stone or cast in metal and mounted on a stone base. These pieces often depict mythological scenes, animals, or human figures. The materials extend beyond pure marble to include alabaster, bronze, spelter, and parian porcelain. They reflect stylistic shifts from nineteenth-century classical revivals to Art Deco designs.

How do I identify the period?

Dating relies on the style of the figures, the type of base, and the signatures or foundry marks stamped into the metal or carved into the stone. Nineteenth-century pieces frequently lean towards classical mythology and naturalistic bronze casting. Twentieth-century examples, particularly from the nineteen-twenties and nineteen-thirties, often adopt Art Deco streamlining with spelter figures mounted on contrasting geometric marble plinths.

Were these made only in marble?

No, although the search specifies marble, sculptors and foundries utilised a range of materials including bronze, patinated bronze, onyx, spelter, alabaster, parian porcelain, and terracotta. It is common to find metal figures mounted upon marble or alabaster bases, or ceramic bodies created to simulate the appearance of carved stone.

How should I care for these pieces?

Care depends entirely on the primary material of the group. Stone and marble tolerate gentle dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can etch polished surfaces. Metal components require similar light dusting, while porous materials like alabaster and parian porcelain must be kept away from moisture and direct water contact.
