What fits inside an antique keepsakes box?

These boxes accommodate small personal items such as rings, letters, loose photographs, and folded lace. The internal trays and velvet compartments keep delicate items separated and secure. Larger cabinets also house small bottles or specialised tools, reflecting the varied daily needs of nineteenth-century owners.

How do I care for wooden boxes?

Keep wooden boxes away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent the dry heat from cracking veneers or shrinking timbers. Maintain a stable indoor humidity level. Apply a minimal amount of suitable furniture wax only when the wood appears dry, buffing gently with a soft cloth to preserve the sheen.

How are periods told apart?

Regency pieces often exhibit classical restraint with satinwood, calamander, and fine brass stringing. Victorian and later nineteenth-century examples frequently employ heavier rosewood, coromandel, and abundant mother of pearl. French Napoleon III items commonly feature boullework or domed forms with distinct decorative brass mounts.

Were these boxes locked?

Most of these boxes were fitted with small brass or steel lever locks to secure private letters and valuable trinkets. Owners carried the tiny matching keys on watch chains or kept them hidden. Keys are frequently lost over centuries, though many locks remain functional with replacement keys or stay as decorative escutcheons.
