How do I identify a true antique console table?

Examine the construction methods underneath and behind the piece, looking for hand-cut joints and period-appropriate timber ageing. Original gesso and gilt layers often exhibit subtle cracking and wear consistent with age rather than artificial distress. Check whether the marble top rests unattached or secured in a manner traditional to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Regional stylistic clues, such as Venetian carving motifs or Neoclassical symmetry, help confirm the likely period of manufacture.

What is Sorrento ware?

Sorrento ware refers to decorative wooden items, particularly occasional and tray tables, adorned with detailed marquetry and inlay work. Artisans utilised contrasting woods to create geometric patterns, botanical scenes, or architectural views. This craft flourished during the nineteenth century, producing highly portable and decorative pieces for travellers on the Grand Tour. The surface is typically smooth to the touch, with the design embedded flush into the timber substrate.

Where should I place a marble-topped table?

Marble-topped console and side tables suit entrance halls, living rooms, or dining spaces where their decorative stone surfaces can be fully appreciated. Their substantial visual weight works well against plain walls or beneath large mirrors. Ensure the table rests on a level floor to maintain stability, particularly for pieces with delicate carved wooden or gilt legs. Avoid exposing antique marble to acidic liquids or harsh chemical cleaners to protect the polish.
