How do I clean an antique crystal chandelier?

Maintenance requires gentle hand-wiping of each crystal pendant and glass fruit using a mild, soapy solution and a soft cloth. Avoid using harsh chemical sprays that might damage the underlying gilt metal or painted wooden surfaces. Support the drop with one hand while cleaning to prevent undue strain on the antique wire loops and delicate pins holding the glass components together.

Can these antique lights be rewired for modern homes?

Most antique fixtures accept modern electrical wiring through their central hollow stems and arms. A qualified electrician can safely update the internal components to meet current safety standards without altering the exterior appearance. Retaining the original sockets or incorporating appropriate candle-style sleeves helps preserve the historical integrity of the piece while ensuring functional domestic use.

What is the difference between a Florentine and a Maria Theresa fixture?

Florentine models rely heavily on carved wood, gesso, and gilt leaf, often incorporating organic motifs such as leaves and floral clusters. They lean towards an earthy, sculptural presence. Maria Theresa designs substitute heavy wooden frames for flat metal bands faced with glass, producing a transparent, prismatic effect that maximises light reflection across a room.

How do I determine the correct hanging height?

Ceiling height dictates the drop of the fixture, ensuring adequate clearance below for foot traffic or furniture placement below. Large multi-tiered chandeliers demand high ceilings to let their vertical scale breathe properly. Consulting with an installer allows you to adjust the chain or cord length so the lowest point of the hanging lantern or chandelier sits comfortably in the space.
