What is included in an antique hearth set?

A set typically includes essential fire tools such as a poker, tongs, and a shovel for managing fuel and ash. Some larger groupings also incorporate fire dogs, grates, or a matching fire screen. Companion sets bring these items together on a unified stand to keep the hearth organised when the fire is not lit.

How do I tell Victorian fire tools apart from Georgian ones?

Georgian fire irons often display slender proportions, refined handle turnings, and restrained use of steel and brass. Victorian examples tend to be heavier, sometimes featuring more elaborate brass ornamentation or bolder cast details. Examining the weight, tool profiles, and manufacturing marks helps distinguish between the two periods.

Can I use antique fire irons with a modern fireplace?

Most metal fire tools from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries remain robust enough for regular use with open fires or wood-burners. Steel and iron implements handle heat well, though brass pieces require gentle handling to preserve their finish. Ensuring the length of the tools suits your fireplace opening makes practical use much easier.

What metals were commonly used for hearth accessories?

Makers relied heavily on brass, steel, iron, and wrought iron for strength and resistance to high temperatures. Gilt metal and wire mesh appeared on specific decorative pieces like fire screens and companion stands. The choice of metal usually reflected both the functional requirements of the tool and the prevailing interior style.
