How do I hang a heavy overmantel mirror safely?

Large overmantel mirrors require robust wall fixings into masonry or direct attachment to timber wall studs using heavy-duty brackets. Due to the substantial weight of the timber carcass, glass plate, and gesso ornament, professional installation ensures the frame remains secure against the wall.

How can I tell a gesso frame from carved wood?

Inspect the intricate ornamental details closely with a magnifying glass to check for uniform seams or mould lines typical of composition paste. Carved wood displays small tool marks and subtle variations in the floral or geometric motifs because an artisan shaped each section by hand.

What causes dark spots on antique mirror glass?

The protective backing behind the silver layer degrades over decades through oxidation and chemical interaction with the atmosphere. This natural ageing process creates the mottled patches and dark foxing marks that collectors prize as proof of genuine antiquity.
