How do I date an old frame?

Dating relies on the construction techniques of the wood, the profile of the moulding, and the composition of the gesso layer underneath the gold leaf. Earlier frames feature hand-carved wooden ornament, while later nineteenth-century examples often utilise cast composition decorations. Matching the style of the frame to the period of the painting provides further context, though many works were reframed in later centuries to suit changing tastes.

Are watercolours framed differently from oils?

Watercolours and pastels require glass protection to shield the delicate paper and pigments from atmospheric moisture and dust. Because of this, they are traditionally set behind glazing within the gilt frame. Oil paintings on canvas or panel are generally left unglazed to allow the textured surface of the paint to be seen directly without reflective interference.

How should I clean a gilt frame?

Dusting should be performed gently using a soft, dry brush or feather duster to avoid disturbing fragile or flaking gold leaf. Moisture and chemical cleaners must be avoided entirely, as they strip the historic finish. Professional conservation is recommended for frames showing significant structural movement or loss of gilding to stabilise the wooden substrate.

What is a school in art titles?

Art historical listings often reference a school, such as the English School or Dutch School, to denote the geographic region and stylistic tradition where an artist trained or worked. This terminology is used when a specific painter's signature or identity is not documented. These designations help collectors identify the prevailing techniques, subjects, and cultural influences present within unsigned historical artworks.
