What periods do these portraits cover?

The available artworks span from the seventeenth century through the Georgian and Regency eras, extending into the Victorian period and early twentieth century. This broad timeline reflects evolving artistic styles and societal changes. Earlier pieces often depict military officers or nobility in elaborate attire, while nineteenth-century works include intimate watercolours, caricatures, and detailed oil portraits.

How can I identify the sitter in a portrait?

Sitters are sometimes identified through inscriptions on the canvas, labels on the reverse, or accompanying historical records detailing names and titles. Military uniforms, civic robes, or specific heraldic elements also provide vital clues for identification. Many portraits remain anonymous, representing gentlemen whose names were lost over the centuries, requiring stylistic analysis of clothing and hair to narrow down the decade.

What framing is typical for these works?

Many oil paintings are housed in period giltwood frames, which range from ornate carved wooden mouldings to simpler eighteenth-century designs. These frames often show age-appropriate wear that matches the antiquity of the canvas within. Watercolours and silhouettes typically feature glazed wooden frames with paper backs, protecting the delicate media from dust and moisture over generations of display.

Are all the artworks painted in oils?

While oil on canvas and wood panels forms the majority of the collection, the selection also includes watercolours on paper, ink silhouettes, and carved marble busts. Each medium offers a distinct visual texture and scale. Works on paper and card, such as silhouettes and caricatures, provide an alternative format to large-scale oil paintings intended for substantial wall spaces.
