Are these canvases relined?

Many older canvases have undergone relining, a preservation process where a new canvas is secured to the back of the original fabric for added structural support. This common conservation practice helps stabilise fragile or degraded textiles against sagging and tearing. Examining the edges and reverse of the stretcher reveals whether a lining canvas has been applied. Professional relining is generally accepted in historical paintings if executed with care.

How should I hang my painting?

Paintings on canvas require stable indoor environments away from direct sunlight, heating vents and damp exterior walls. Fluctuations in humidity and temperature cause the wooden stretcher and textile canvas to expand and contract at different rates. Secure picture hooks directly into wall studs or employ heavy-duty fixings suited to the weight of the frame. Ensure the hanging wire and D-rings on the reverse are robust enough to support the entire assembly safely.

Can I replace the frame?

Changing the frame is possible, but period frames are historically linked to the canvas they enclose and contribute to the overall presentation. Removing an original period surround can diminish the historical context and visual harmony of the artwork. If framing adjustments are necessary, consult a specialist framer who understands conservation methods. Ensure any replacement moulding respects the era and aesthetic scale of the painting.
