How were cabinet plates used?

These plates were designed strictly for display in drawing rooms, parlours, or dining rooms to showcase the wealth and taste of the household. Owners placed them on sideboards, mounted them on walls, or housed them within glass-fronted cabinets. Unlike utility wares, they rarely saw service during meals, which preserved their delicate enamels and intricate gold leaf from everyday wear and tear.

How do I date an antique plate?

Dating relies on identifying factory backstamps, painted factory marks, and the specific composition of the porcelain body. Eighteenth-century pieces often utilise soft-paste porcelain with hand-pencilled factory ciphers, while nineteenth-century items frequently employ impressed marks or printed registry diamonds. Stylistic shifts, such as the transition from Regency botanical studies to Victorian rich cobalt and tooled gilding, also help narrow the decade of production.

What is the difference between Imari and floral plates?

Floral plates feature naturalistic or botanical painting of garden flowers, orchids, or scattered sprays like Streublumen. Imari plates follow a specific decorative tradition originating in Japan, utilising a stylised palette of iron red, underglaze blue, and gold leaf. While both decorate cabinet dishes, Imari patterns adhere to strict Japanese aesthetic conventions rather than European botanical illustration.

How should I display porcelain at home?

Porcelain plates require stable environments away from direct sunlight to prevent the fading of enamel colours and gold gilding. Wall mounting requires specialised plate hangers with protective rubber tips to avoid chipping the edges. Displaying them inside enclosed cabinets protects the glazed surfaces from airborne dust and accidental household knocks.
