What is an antique drinks trolley used for?

These mobile carts serve as portable storage and display surfaces for bottles, decanters, glassware, and tea services. They allow hosts to wheel refreshments directly to guests in a living room or dining area. Historically, they also functioned as sideboards or serving tables that could be cleared away or moved between rooms as social gatherings shifted location.

How do I date an antique drinks trolley?

Dating relies on identifying the prevailing style, timber choices, and construction methods associated with specific decades. Edwardian and Victorian pieces often feature turned wooden legs and rich mahogany, while Art Deco examples show geometric lines and burr walnut veneer. Hardware such as the style of brass casters and handles also offers strong clues to the exact manufacturing period of the cart.

Are antique drinks trolleys sturdy enough for daily use?

Most pieces were built from solid hardwoods like oak, teak, and mahogany, making them remarkably durable and well-suited for holding heavy bottles and glassware. Regular use poses little threat as long as the joints remain tight and the wheels turn freely. Care should be taken with delicate veneer surfaces, which benefit from coasters and prompt wiping of any spilled liquids.

What is the difference between a tea trolley and a drinks trolley?

While often used interchangeably by makers and buyers, tea trolleys traditionally feature removable top trays and drop sides specifically sized for porcelain tea sets and cakes. Drinks trolleys frequently emphasise lower shelf clearance for tall bottles and built-in glass racks. Many surviving examples from the early twentieth century served both purposes depending on the needs of the household.
