What is a bedside pot cupboard?

A bedside pot cupboard is a compact enclosed cabinet designed historically to conceal a chamber pot out of sight. They typically feature a hinged door opening to reveal a compartment and sometimes a small drawer above. Today, these versatile cupboards function perfectly as standard bedside tables or small lamp tables in tight spaces. Their enclosed storage keeps modern bedroom clutter hidden away neatly.

How do I match a pair?

Matching a pair involves looking closely at timber grain, wood colour, and hardware details rather than relying on identical dimensions alone. Many antique bedside chests were produced in matched sets, but minor variations can occur due to hand-finishing. Positioning them with a slight separation beside the bed helps accommodate subtle differences in height or tone. Consulting the specific material notes on each listing ensures the woods complement one another.

Are marble tops original?

Marble tops on bedside cabinets were frequently specified to provide a durable, water-resistant surface for washing equipment and bedside water jugs. They are commonly found on French cabinets and select English pieces from the Victorian era onward. Inspect the seating of the marble within the wooden frame to understand its period application. These stone surfaces add weight and a distinct cooling texture to the piece.

How do I care for antique wood?

Maintaining antique wood requires keeping pieces away from direct heat sources and sudden temperature shifts that can dry out old timbers. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished surface without the buildup of heavy commercial polishes. Applying a traditional wax polish occasionally feeds the grain and protects the finish of mahogany and walnut. Gentle handling of original brass hardware ensures the drawers and doors continue to operate smoothly.
