How do I clean burr walnut furniture?

Maintain the timber surfaces by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth to prevent abrasive particles from scratching the fragile veneer. Avoid using modern aerosol polishes, silicone sprays or excessive water which can penetrate the finish and damage the underlying wood. Apply a quality microcrystalline wax sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect the polished surface. Keep these pieces away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the walnut veneer from drying out and lifting.

What is an antique canterbury used for?

Canterburys originated in the late eighteenth century as small occasional stands specifically designed to hold sheets of music near a piano or seating area. Victorian examples frequently incorporated slatted divisions, carrying handles, and an under-tier drawer for smaller accessories. Today these versatile pieces function well as side tables, bedside stands, or magazine racks in a sitting room. Their compact proportions and decorative burr walnut construction allow them to fit easily into smaller interior spaces.

How do I date art deco walnut furniture?

Nineteen-thirties art deco items are characterised by geometric silhouettes, streamlined curves, and unadorned surfaces that showcase the dramatic grain of the burr walnut. Common forms include pedestal dressing tables, console tables, leather top desks, and oval display cabinets. Check interior compartments and drawer construction for machine-assisted joinery alongside traditional hand-finishing typical of the interwar period. These pieces lack the ornate marquetry and heavy mouldings associated with earlier Victorian or Georgian furniture.
