How do I date an antique bookcase?

Dating relies on identifying the prevailing timber, construction methods and stylistic details associated with periods like Georgian, Regency or Victorian. Mahogany and satinwood often point to earlier Georgian and Regency pieces, while walnut and pine frequently align with later Victorian and Edwardian examples. Examine the backboards, drawer dovetails and hardware for manufacturing clues. Original glass panes and hinges also help confirm the period of construction.

Can shelves be adjusted?

Many Victorian and Regency variants feature adjustable shelving supported by wooden ratchets or metal pins. This allowed owners to accommodate books of varying heights. Earlier Georgian pieces often have fixed wooden shelves integrated directly into the carcass structure. Check individual listings to confirm shelf adjustability.

How should I care for timber?

Maintain polished hardwood surfaces by dusting with a dry lint-free cloth and applying occasional quality beeswax. Avoid placing antique furniture near direct heat sources or in strong sunlight to prevent timber splitting and veneer lifting. Keep indoor humidity stable to preserve the structural integrity of older pine, oak and mahogany carcasses.
