What size mattresses fit antique bedstead frames?

Many older frames were manufactured to historical dimensions that differ slightly from modern standard sizes. Checking the internal length and width specifications of each frame ensures a proper mattress fit. Custom mattresses or adjustments to the side rails may be necessary for certain nineteenth-century or continental sizes. Professional mattress makers can accommodate these specific measurements.

How do I assemble an antique metal bed?

Most metal bedsteads utilise a straightforward slot-in rail system that locks into the headboard and footboard posts without requiring complex fixings. Gravity and the weight of the mattress secure the joints firmly in place. Having an extra pair of hands helps align the side irons correctly. Checking that the frame sits squarely on its castors ensures stability.

Are wooden and iron beds easy to maintain?

Maintaining wood frames involves occasional polishing with appropriate wax to preserve the timber finish and prevent drying. Iron and brass surfaces benefit from gentle dusting and occasional cleaning with non-abrasive metal care products. Avoiding excessive moisture and direct sunlight protects both timber polishes and metal lacquers. Regular checks on bolts and joints keep the structure secure.

Can I use modern bedding with these beds?

Standard duvets, pillows, and linens pair easily with period frames once the correct mattress size is established. The visual contrast between contemporary textiles and historic woodwork or metal creates an effective interior style. Ensuring adequate support beneath the mattress safeguards both the bedding and the antique frame. Slatted bases or modern sprung supports can be adapted to fit historical dimensions.
