How do I identify a baluch rug?

Look for dark, saturated colour palettes dominated by deep indigos, madder reds, and dark browns, combined with geometric tribal motifs. The integration of camel hair in the foundation or pile is another strong indicator of these nomadic pieces. Examine the format and edge finishes, as many feature distinctive flatwoven ends or characteristic prayer rug designs. Their origins span the borderlands of Persia and Afghanistan rather than fixed urban workshops.

Where were these carpets made?

Nomadic and village weavers produced these textiles across the border regions connecting Persia, Afghanistan, and parts of Baluchistan. Communities such as the Timuri and Taimani contributed distinct regional variations to the overarching tradition. These makers moved seasonally across harsh terrain, bringing their weaving traditions with them. Consequently, specific design traits often point toward particular tribal groups rather than specific towns.

Are prayer rugs different from main carpets?

Prayer rugs feature a distinct arched mihrab design intended to direct the owner during daily devotions. They are generally smaller in scale, designed for individual use rather than covering a large floor space. Main carpets and runners offer larger formats meant for communal spaces or hallways. While they share the same wool materials and tribal motifs, their overall layouts omit the prayer arch in favour of all-over field patterns.

How should I care for an old wool rug?

Protect the textile by placing it in a low-traffic area out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the natural dyes. Vacuum gently without using a rotating brush roll to avoid pulling the aged wool pile. Rotate the rug periodically to ensure even wear across the surface over time. Professional cleaning tailored to antique textiles should be utilised when deep maintenance becomes necessary.
