What is a 1930s cocktail table?

A 1930s cocktail table is a low surface designed for entertaining, often incorporating trays, glass panels, or storage for drinks. These pieces reflect the social habits of the interwar period through specialised forms like drinks trolleys and pop-up tables.

Were these tables used for serving drinks?

Many examples include integrated trays, drop leaves, or concealed compartments specifically for glassware and bottles. Metamorphic and pop-up designs allowed hosts to reveal hidden storage during social gatherings.

What woods are common in 1930s tables?

Walnut and burr walnut are the primary timbers found across these tables, often enhanced by decorative grain patterns. Other examples incorporate exotic woods such as macassar, ebony, and satin birch.
