What is a Gainsborough chair?

A Gainsborough chair is a wide, upholstered armchair with open padded arms designed for the library or study during the mid-Georgian period. These pieces typically feature straight or slightly curved legs and provide a comfortable seat for reading without the enclosed wings of a fireside chair.

How do I identify a Chippendale armchair?

Chippendale armchairs are recognised by their carved mahogany frames, intricately pierced splat backs, and details inspired by Gothic, French, or Chinese design. They frequently display substantial proportions and sophisticated joinery characteristic of cabinet-making workshops active during the middle and late 18th century.

Were these chairs used for dining?

Armchairs served various domestic functions, with open-armed carvers frequently accompanying sets of single chairs around the dining table. Dining armchairs offered a more prominent seat for the head of the household while maintaining a design consistent with the rest of the dining suite.

How should I care for old mahogany?

Maintenance involves keeping timber away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to prevent the wood and glue joints from drying out. Applying a traditional beeswax polish helps nourish the surface and preserve the natural patina built up over centuries of handling.
