This Victorian silver-plated lidded beer tankard, cider jug, or flagon dates to 1880 and exemplifies the English Country House style. The body displays a reflective silver colour with chased floral engraving, leaves, tassels, and scrolls surrounding a vacant cartouche. Additional details comprise a hinged lid with a raised shell thumbpiece, a figural head of a man to the front and a woman to the back below the shaped handle, and ivory insulators on the handle alongside an ivory finial. The piece rests on a stepped circular base and includes a shaped spout. Practical dimensions of this jug span approximately 25 cm in height, making it well-suited for display on a sideboard top or for use in serving beverages during formal dining occasions in a contemporary home. British-made and bearing the maker's mark for George Shadford and Henry Wigfull of Sheffield stamped underneath, the tankard has been resilvered and registered with the UK Government as containing pre-1947 ivory.

A Victorian silver-plated lidded jug is a covered pouring vessel produced during the nineteenth century for serving cider, ale, or water. Commercial electroplating technology allowed silver-coated tableware with detailed engraving to become widely accessible during this era.

These items feature a base metal core, typically nickel silver or brass, electroplated with a surface layer of fine silver. Handles frequently incorporate small insulating rings made from bone or wood to resist heat transfer from warm liquids.

Authentic pieces generally feature period maker stamps or EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver) markings near the base or rim. Gradual surface wear revealing underlying base metal on high points, along with period-appropriate hand-engraved motifs, further confirms authenticity.

A silver-plated jug works effectively as a dining table centrepiece, a sideboard accent, or an unconventional vase for dried botanical displays. Placing reflective silver surfaces beside matte materials like dark wood or unpolished stone provides contrast in contemporary settings.

Dust regularly and clean using a soft microfiber cloth with a specialised non-abrasive silver polish to avoid wearing down the silver layer. Hand wash gently in warm water with mild soap, avoiding automated dishwashers and harsh chemicals.
