Henry John Yeend King was a London landscape and rustic genre painter, who spent three years in a glassworks before devoting his life to his art. He studied under William Bromley and also with Bonnat and Cormon in Paris.

Yeend King was typical of many late Victorian painters of rustic genre, often painting garden scenes with pretty girls. However, his robust \'plein air\' technique and bold palette were obviously the influence of his Paris training. He married the sister of Robert Gallon\'s wife.

He exhibited widely between 1874 and 1924, including the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Grosvenor Gallery, as well as in the provinces. He was elected RBA in 1879 and RI in 1886, where he later became Vice-President. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

Works by this artist are in the Tate Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Reading, Rochdale and Sheffield Galleries.

This late Victorian watercolour painting, entitled "Evening" and signed by Henry John Yeend King, dates from around 1900. Rendered on paper in muted earth tones, the artwork depicts cottage architecture with a red roof, a wooden footbridge, a riverbank, and a flock of birds in flight. The composition displays visible brushwork detailing the rustic English country scene, trees, and buildings. The framed piece measures 48 cm high, 58.5 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. It is presented in very good, ready-to-hang condition after being cleaned. Suitable for traditional and classic interior schemes, this painting brings a tranquil countryside atmosphere into the home. It is designed to be hung on a wall above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway, serving as a focal point in the interior space. The artwork complements English country house styling and pairs well with wooden furniture and neutral wall colours.

Late 19th-century British watercolours are characterised by naturalistic depictions of rural life, atmospheric light effects, and fluid wash techniques. Artists frequently documented rustic cottages, agricultural scenes, and waterways, reflecting movements toward plein air execution.

Victorian artists used water-based pigments suspended in gum arabic, applied directly to heavy cotton rag or linen paper. Natural hair brushes, such as sable, were employed to execute both detailed linework and broad background washes.

Authentic works often feature artist signatures, period framing, or gallery labels on the backing board. Physical traits including paper oxidation, age-appropriate foxing, and natural pigment settling assist in verification.

Antique watercolours complement modern interiors when set within simple wood frames or slender gilded mouldings. Displaying them above sideboards or inside gallery wall arrangements adds architectural history and tone to living spaces.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, display watercolours away from direct sunlight and high-humidity areas. Utilise UV-filtering glass and acid-free backing materials when mounting or re-framing.
