Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian walnut canterbury exhibits a warm brown timber colour throughout, standing upon small brass cup castors fitted with wheels. The upper tier has an open shelf surrounded by a low pierced fretwork gallery. Four barley twist corner supports hold the top shelf above the main body, which contains partitioned storage sections and a panel of intricate carved scrollwork decoration. The lower section incorporates a single storage drawer fitted with two small turned wooden pull handles. Measuring 98 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, this piece provides compact tiered storage for books, magazines or periodicals. It suits placement at the end of a sofa or beside a chair in a traditional English country house setting.

FAQs

A canterbury is a piece of low mobile furniture fitted with vertical partitions designed to store music scores, bound volumes, or periodicals, which gained popularity during the 19th century in Victorian drawing rooms.

Victorian examples were typically crafted from solid walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, frequently incorporating hand-turned spiral twist supports, pierced fretwork partitions, dovetail drawer joints, and brass castors.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved fretwork, brass castors secured to turned legs, hand-cut dovetails on lower drawers, and natural surface wear consistent with 19th-century cabinetmaking.

An antique canterbury serves effectively as an occasional side table beside a sofa or armchair, where the partitioned lower section holds contemporary magazines, art books, or vinyl records.

Maintain the timber surface by dusting regularly with a dry soft cloth, applying a neutral beeswax polish periodically, and keeping the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity.
