This pair of Victorian watercolours by French artist Henri Schafer dates to around 1860 and depicts detailed European architectural town scenes including Gothic cathedral spires. The works employ a palette of muted earth tones and are presented behind glass within wide white mounts and ornate carved gilt wood frames with acanthus leaf moulding. One corner of the gesso shows slight damage, indicating period wear. Each framed painting measures 79 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this pair suits placement above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway to bring historical character to an interior.

FAQs

During the Victorian era, artists frequently rendered European architectural subjects, capturing urban streetscapes, historic cathedrals, and market squares with precise line work and soft wash techniques.

These works were executed using water-based pigments on heavy rag paper, mounted behind glass, and housed in hand-carved or moulded timber frames finished with gold leaf or bronze powders.

Authentic works by Henri Schafer typically feature a distinct signature in a lower corner, detailed depictions of French or Belgian Gothic architecture, and characteristic light-toned washes for sky and stone.

A symmetrical pair of framed artworks works well positioned above a sideboard, flanking a fireplace, or aligned along a hallway to introduce historical narrative into modern schemes.

Display watercolours away from direct sunlight and high-humidity areas to prevent fading and foxing. Reframing should utilise conservation-grade, acid-free mounts and UV-filtering glass.
