Description

Large Fine Antique Austrian Cold-Painted Bronze Parrot – Franz Bergman

Brief Description:

This is a magnificent and substantial early 20th-century Austrian cold-painted bronze sculpture depicting a beautifully modelled crested cockatoo, attributed to the celebrated Franz Bergman foundry of Vienna.

This impressive antique bronze displays exceptional attention to detail, from the bird's magnificent raised crest and expressive eyes to the wonderfully intricate feathering that extends across its wings, breast and long, elegantly tapered tail.

The superbly executed cold-painted decoration retains attractive shades of golden yellow, ivor y and cream, beautifully complemented by the darker patination of its beak and claws.

The cockatoo is realistically perched upon a wonderfully naturalistic bronze tree branch, which forms an attractive, freestanding base.

Of particular interest, the sculpture bears the impressed GESCHÜTZT mark (German for 'protected', commonly associated with registered designs), together with the impressed numbers 33/053, adding period interest.

A highly decorative and wonderfully characterful example of Viennese bronze craftsmanship, combining exceptional modelling with an appealing naturalistic composition.

This early 20th-century Austrian cold-painted bronze sculpture depicts a crested cockatoo in the Vienna Bronze style. The piece is formed from cold-painted bronze with a polychrome finish in shades of golden yellow, ivory, cream, and darker tones on the beak and claws, showing subtle wear across the painted surfaces alongside an impressed GESCHÜTZT mark and the numbers 33/053. The sculpture measures 30.7 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 15.2 cm deep. The cockatoo has a raised crest, expressive eyes, and intricate feather detailing across its wings, breast, and long tapered tail, and it sits in a perched posture upon a naturalistic bronze tree branch base. Suitable for display in a gentleman's library or on a mantelpiece, this freestanding object adds characterful animal representation to an interior scheme.

Cold-painted bronzes are cast metal figures decorated with layers of unfired oil-based paint or enamel after casting. This technique, popularized in Vienna during the late nineteenth century, created realistic multi-coloured finishes.

These sculptures were cast in solid bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques, followed by precise hand-chasing and the application of polychrome lead or oil paints directly to the metal surface.

Authentic pieces often feature foundry marks, such as the letter B within a vase for Franz Bergman, alongside sharp casting details, substantial weight, and naturalistic surface wear to the paint layer.

Place the sculpture on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or desk alongside leather-bound books, wooden accents, or modern neutral decor to create visual interest and highlight its detailed paintwork.

Dust the item gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush. Avoid water, chemical solvents, or metal polishes, as these will permanently strip the original painted finish.
