This Georgian period wine cooler is made from dark brown mahogany with satinwood string inlay and stands 66 cm high. Dating from around 1800, the piece combines a domed hinged lid with a central decorative brass escutcheon, matching brass side carry handles, and square tapered legs. The timber displays a polished finish with a natural patina from age, complemented by precise inlay tracing the contours of the lid and front panel. In a contemporary home, this item fits naturally into an empty corner of a dining room or living space as a decorative storage chest for bottles and bar accessories. The proportions of 45 cm wide and 31 cm deep make it compact enough to place in smaller reception areas while maintaining a traditional English country house aesthetic.

During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, cellarettes were portable wooden chests designed to hold and cool wine bottles in dining rooms. They typically featured zinc or lead linings filled with ice to maintain bottle temperature during long dinners.

Georgian wine coolers were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, often featuring boxwood or satinwood string inlay, brass side handles, brass escutcheons, and lead or zinc interior linings.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass hardware showing natural patination, timber oxidisation, and hand-planed interior surfaces consistent with late 18th-century cabinetmaking methods.

A cellarette can serve as a functional drink cabinet, side table, or decorative accent in a formal dining area, living room, or study, bringing historical character to modern spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood movement and colour fading.
