This pair of Victorian whatnots dates from 1870 in the English Country House style, made from walnut with a warm brown polished finish and brass hardware. Each three-tier piece has shaped oval shelves connected by spiralled barley twist supports, topped with small turned finials at the corners, and stands on turned and carved feet with brass castors. The timber shows rich grain patterns across all tiers, with darker carved wooden elements and visible metal fittings on the feet. Measuring 106 cm high, 68 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, these display stands provide vertical surface space for books or ornaments. They suit placement in an empty corner of a living room or hallway to display decorative items while adding traditional Victorian furniture to the interior.

A whatnot is an open-shelved piece of furniture, originating in the late eighteenth century, designed to display ornaments, books, and collectables across multiple tiers.

Victorian whatnots were commonly constructed from solid walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, featuring turned or barley twist supports, veneered shelf surfaces, and brass castors for mobility.

Genuine Victorian pieces feature hand-turned columns, brass or iron castor wheels attached to turned feet, natural wood grain variation across veneered surfaces, and hand-cut joinery underneath the shelves.

Position the pair symmetrically on either side of a fireplace or window to frame the space, using the open shelving to hold curated books, ceramics, or small potted plants.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish and prevent drying.
