  • Period19th century

This nineteenth-century grey wash drawing, attributed to David Cox, depicts a timber-frame house near Birmingham in Warwickshire. Rendered in black Indian ink and grey wash on wove paper, the monochrome artwork is presented unframed in a conservation standard clear polyester sleeve. The scene illustrates a rustic cottage featuring a prominent stone chimney, leaded glass windows, a tiled roof, and an exterior staircase with a wooden handrail, set against a backdrop of dense foliage with a solitary figure walking along a path in the distance. The sheet measures 17.9 x 20.5 cm. Suitable for display in a traditional study, hallway, or living room, this historic artwork requires framing behind UV-protective glass to safeguard the paper and ink from environmental damage. The piece integrates easily into existing galleries of historic watercolours, botanical prints, or period architectural sketches.
