Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Impressed lettering on the base: production from the known Angers religious statuary workshop.
Figure depicted without a halo: sculpted before her official beatification and canonisation.
Hand-painted polychrome decoration with gilded fleur-de-lys: traditional French church workshop styling.

This life-size French Gothic Revival statue depicts Saint Joan of Arc in full battle dress, dating from 1870. Sculpted in plaster with polychrome paint and gilt finishes, the piece portrays the saint wearing silver-toned plate armour over chain mail, a blue tunic decorated with gold fleur-de-lis motifs, and a detailed heraldic banner aloft while holding a sword. A knight's helmet rests at her feet on the small plinth base. Pierre Rouillard of Angers made the sculpture, which measures 221 cm tall overall, with the figure standing 160 cm tall and the base measuring 81 cm square. The removable sword and standard allow for transportation. Placed in an empty corner, the statue serves as a striking focal point in a Victorian interior or hallway today.

Depictions of Saint Joan of Arc proliferated across France in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, coinciding with her beatification in 1909 and canonisation in 1920. Sculptors created detailed standing figures depicting her as a medieval warrior saint clad in plate armour, often commissioned for parish churches, convents, and private chapels.

These sculptures were typically cast in plaster or terracotta using multi-piece moulds, allowed to cure, and then hand-painted using layered tempera or oil-based polychrome finishes. Accents were often highlighted with gold leaf or metallic gilt paint to detail heraldic symbols, tunic patterns, and armour joints.

Authentic pieces frequently display foundry or workshop stamps near the base, such as markings from French sculpture centres like Angers, Paris, or Lyon. Examining the base for impressed maker signatures, age-appropriate wear to the paint layers, and natural surface patination helps confirm period origin.

A large standing sculpture functions effectively as a focal point when positioned in an empty corner, hallway alcove, or alongside dark timber furniture. Placing the piece against a neutral backdrop allows the structural silhouette and original polychrome pigment to contrast with modern interior elements.

Remove loose surface dust using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or vacuum equipped with a gentle brush attachment. Avoid water, chemical detergents, or liquid solvents, as moisture can dissolve historic paints or erode underlying plaster.
