This nineteenth-century sculpture depicts a standing cherub playing a harp, created in the Neoclassical style. The piece consists of a cast bronze figure with a rich, dark brown patinated finish, mounted on a turned and stepped circular black marble base with visible mineral flecks and fine mouldings. The cherub has curly hair, delicate facial features, and defined anatomical detail, while the decorative harp features an elegantly curved neck and fine metal strings. Ideal for placement on a mantelpiece or side table, this French sculpture suits traditional interior settings. It brings classical character to a room while introducing textures of dark patinated metal and polished stone to a display surface.

During the 19th century, Neoclassical and Classical Revival artistic movements inspired widespread production of bronze figural works representing mythic themes, putti, and cherubs playing musical instruments. These pieces were frequently commissioned as decorative objects for domestic interiors across Western Europe.

Most sculptures of this period were cast in solid bronze using the lost-wax method and finished with a dark chemical patina. They were commonly mounted on turned or polished stone pedestals, such as black marble or granite.

Authentic 19th-century bronzes exhibit natural surface wear, precise hand-chased details around features such as hands and instruments, substantial weight, and evidence of period casting techniques or foundry stamps along the base.

A bronze sculpture functions effectively when positioned on a fireplace mantelpiece, marble sideboard top, or within a curated bookshelf display alongside books and decorative ceramics to introduce contrast and historical texture.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid liquid solvents or harsh chemicals, and periodically apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to protect the patinated surface from moisture and oxidisation.
