Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Raised diamond mouldings: Continental cabinetmaking of the middle to late 19th century.
Solid two-board oak top: timber shrinkage and centuries of surface wear.
Deeply crackled multi-layered paint: natural ageing over many decades of use.
Oxidised rough-sawn pine interior: untouched utilitarian joinery from the working period.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French shop counter is built from pine and oak in a rustic farmhouse style. The cabinet has an off-white distressed paint finish, a thick moulded top edge, and twin front doors with raised diamond panels set above a moulded plinth base. Traces of historical wear and tear appear across the surface through marks in the paint and the aged texture of the timber. Measuring 84 cm high, 149 cm wide, and 49 cm deep, the counter fits well in a country kitchen as a prep island, or functions as a sideboard in a dining room to store tableware and linens while providing a practical surface for serving food.

FAQs

A 19th-century French shop counter is a piece of commercial furniture originally designed for retail establishments such as bakeries, general stores, or draperies. These pieces typically featured flat wooden tops for measuring and transacting goods, backed by panelled wooden fronts crafted in pine, oak, or chestnut.

Traditional French shop counters were constructed primarily from native hardwoods and softwoods, including oak, pine, and poplar. Frame-and-panel joinery was standard, often combined with painted or wax finishes to protect the timber in high-traffic commercial environments.

Authentic shop counters display wear patterns consistent with commercial utility, such as localized surface wear on the worktop, historic paint layers, and hand-cut joinery. The back of the piece often includes open shelving, drawers, or bin storage original to its trade function.

In contemporary interiors, shop counters are commonly used as freestanding kitchen islands, room dividers in open-plan spaces, or substantial hallway sideboards. Their long profiles provide storage while creating an architectural focal point.

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleansers that may lift original paint layers. Clear furniture wax applied sparingly once or twice a year helps preserve both the timber and historic paint finishes.
